Craniosacral Therapy

Craniosacral Therapy: A Holistic Approach

Rooted in osteopathic medicine, Craniosacral Therapy (CST) is a gentle, hands-on method of evaluating and enhancing the functioning of a physiological body system called the craniosacral system. This system is comprised of the membranes and cerebrospinal fluid that surround and protect the brain and spinal cord. Using a soft touch, practitioners release restrictions in the craniosacral system to improve the functioning of the central nervous system. By complementing the body’s natural healing processes, CST is increasingly used as a preventive health measure for its ability to bolster resistance to disease, and is effective for a wide range of medical problems associated with pain and dysfunction, including:

  • Autism
  • Central nervous system disorders
  • Chronic Fatigue Syndrome
  • Chronic neck and back pain
  • Colic
  • Emotional difficulties
  • Fibromyalgia and other connective tissue disorders
  • Infantile disorders
  • Learning disabilities
  • Migraine headaches
  • Motor coordination impairments
  • Neurovascular or immune disorders
  • Orthopedic problems
  • Post-surgical dysfunction
  • Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)
  • Scoliosis
  • Stress and tension-related problems
  • Temporomandibular joint (TMJ) syndrome
  • Traumatic brain and spinal cord injuries

Craniosacral Therapy is based on the theory that cerebrospinal fluid ebbs and flows within the membrane around the brain and spinal cord, increasing or decreasing pressure on the cranium in the process. For some individuals, whether through illness or injury, the craniosacral rhythmic flow may be disrupted or impeded, resulting in chronic pain, discomfort, or ailments such as recurring ear and sinus infections.

With this treatment, the therapist takes as non-directive, non-invasive approach, essentially enabling the client’s body to heal itself through the art of listening. The craniosacral therapist provides a window for the client to witness physical, emotional, psychological, and spiritual restrictions, the resolution of which will enhance the individual’s overall vitality and well-being.
